Benfica have filed a formal complaint against FC Porto with the Portuguese Football Federation's Disciplinary Council. The document concerns incidents during the league derby at the Estádio do Dragão, which Porto won 3-1 last weekend.
The complaint from the Lisbon club alleges a member of Porto's backroom staff made offensive gestures towards the Benfica bench. It also states that midfielder Gabri Veiga, who scored the opening goal, threw a bottle in the direction of their technical area. Beyond these episodes, Benfica criticises the stadium atmosphere as provocative and disrespectful, and has requested an investigation into the origin of images filmed from their bench and broadcast on Porto Canal.
The match, which handed Benfica their first league defeat of the season, saw defender Clément Lenglet sent off with two yellow cards. The result solidified Porto's position at the top of the Primeira Liga, where they have 21 points from seven games and lead by five points. Sérgio Conceição's team are in excellent form, having won six consecutive league matches.
FC Porto have not yet issued an official comment on the complaint. The process now moves to the Disciplinary Council, which will review the facts and could impose sanctions. The blue and whites, with Gabri Veiga as their top scorer this season on four goals, now turn their focus to an away fixture against Marítimo on October 10th. Gabri Veiga has been scoring a goal on average every 91 minutes in league play. The upcoming schedule is available on our fixtures page.
