Seko Fofana has returned to FC Porto, confirmed on Wednesday as a new signing on loan from Rennes until the end of the season. The 31-year-old Ivory Coast international midfielder joins on a deal with no option to buy, as announced by the club's official channels.
Fofana did not hide his delight. "The truth is I always wanted to return to FC Porto. Today I made that dream come true," the player said.
The midfielder made it clear that fond memories from his first spell were key. He was part of the squad that won the Primeira Liga title in the 2022/23 season, an experience that marked his career. "I have very good memories of FC Porto, because we had a great season. This dressing room brings me very good memories," Fofana explained. He also highlighted the welcoming environment he found at the club, mentioning teammates and staff who helped him settle.
His previous experience and knowledge of the first-team squad are factors that could speed up his integration. Porto is entering a decisive phase of the season, with commitments in the league and the Portuguese Cup. Sérgio Conceição's team currently sits second in the standings, three points behind the leader, and prepares for its next league match against Estoril on September 14th.
Fofana's arrival strengthens Porto's central midfield, which features players like Alan Varela, Nico González, and Stephen Eustáquio. Manager Sérgio Conceição gains an option with physical attributes and top-level experience. Fofana is a box-to-box midfielder, known for his ball-carrying ability and runs into the box.
His signing, although temporary, addresses a need identified after Marko Grujić's departure in the last summer window. The player's profile could be particularly useful in matches where Porto requires greater physical presence and dynamism through the middle.
The loan without an option to buy means Fofana's future beyond June 2027 remains open. Immediately, the player is available to start training with the team and could be an option as soon as this weekend. His fitness will be assessed in the coming sessions, but his familiarity with many teammates and the working methods should ease the transition.
The return comes at a time when Porto seeks consistency to maintain pressure in the title race. The team faces a demanding schedule, with matches every three or four days throughout September.
Fofana will wear the number 6 shirt, the same he used during his first spell at the club. His first training session with the first team is scheduled for this Thursday.
