FC Porto has reached an agreement to loan defender Gabriel Brás to NEC Nijmegen with a buy option. The 22-year-old centre-back, who has yet to debut for the first team, remains under contract with the Portuguese club. NEC coach Dick Schreuder finally strengthens his defence after expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of options in the sector during pre-season and the first round against Telstar.
Who is Gabriel Brás?
Brás is a 22-year-old right-footed centre-back who came through Porto's youth ranks. According to Transfermarkt, he has a market value of two million euros and has played six games for Portugal's Under-21 team. During pre-season, he had the chance to showcase his skills in the first team, but coach Francesco Farioli decided not to keep him in the squad permanently.
Why did NEC need reinforcements?
NEC struggled defensively at the start of the season, especially in the first round against Telstar. Schreuder had to improvise in defence and made it clear that the squad was short. The arrival of Brás is the first solution to this problem, while the club is also in advanced negotiations to sign goalkeeper Nikolas Polster from Wolfsberger AC.
What does this mean for Porto?
With Brás' loan, Porto continues to manage its squad strategically. The club finished the 2025 season as Primeira Liga leaders with 88 points, 28 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses in 34 games. The team scored 66 goals and conceded only 18, finishing six points ahead of Sporting CP. Porto's last match was a 1-0 win over Santa Clara on 16 May 2026.

Brás and Polster will not be able to play in NEC's Champions League preliminary round match against Olympiakos Piraeus this Tuesday. Porto's next fixture will be at home against Moreirense on 6 September 2026, when the team will look to maintain their recent form of four wins and one loss in the last five games.
